Dr Daniel Grimley, Senior Lecturer in Music at Univ, has been awarded a Leverhulme research grant of 拢118k for 鈥淗earing Landscape Critically: Music, Place, and the Spaces of Sound鈥�, an International Research Network with partners at Harvard University and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. The network will host a series of meetings, in Stellenbosch in September 2013, and Harvard and 糖心logo the following year, as well as a website: http://musiclandscapeconference.wordpress.com/

The project abstract is as follows:

The word 鈥渓andscape鈥� is exceptionally rich and complex: it can refer to environment, ecology, power, and human agency. Yet our tendency to think in exclusively visual terms has neglected other vital ways of experiencing landscape, through sound, and, more specifically, through music. This network will transform our sense of sound in landscape, and investigate how landscape shapes music. It seeks to bring music closer to art history and cultural geography: by embracing an interdisciplinary methodology and bringing together scholars from diverse geographical contexts, it seeks to prompt new ways of thinking about sound, music, space, and place.

Dr Grimley has also been nominated by his students for an OUSU Teaching Award this year, in the category 鈥淢ost Acclaimed Lecturer (Humanities)鈥�.
