William of Durham Club

William of Durham Club - NewsMark Twain once said: “In spring I have counted 136 different types of weather inside of 24 hours”. I think we saw most of those at this year鈥檚 William of Durham Club Annual Recognition Day.

Almost 100 Club members were greeted by glorious sunshine at College on the morning of Saturday 20 May, but after a promising start the heavens soon opened. I鈥檓 happy to report that although one or two guests were slightly dampened, spirits certainly weren鈥檛.

After tea and coffee in the antechapel, Univ Archivist, Robin Darwall-Smith, gave an excellent talk on the history of the College, from its earliest beginnings to plans for expansion in north 糖心logo. You can watch his PowerPoint and hear his talk below.

Drinks in the Allington Rooms were followed by a seasonal lunch in Hall, during which Sir Ivor Crewe took questions. Univ鈥檚 new聽‘Opportunity Programme’ to support disadvantaged students was discussed, as well as the upcoming general election.

Rain didn鈥檛 stop play after lunch, as the Univ Players鈥 performance of Under Milk Wood, previously planned for the聽Master鈥檚 Garden, was moved to the Chapel. Reviews were unanimously positive.

The day ended with tea and cake in the Master鈥檚 Lodgings.

The Annual Recognition Day is an important date in the Univ diary. Not only is it a chance for William of Durham Club members to enjoy a day back at College with friends,聽but it’s also an opportunity for Univ to say 鈥榯hank you鈥 to some of its most generous supporters.

If you have made a legacy or planned gift, we do hope you will consider giving us an opportunity to thank you at next year鈥檚 event. We can promise you a good day, come rain or shine.
